BSL/English Interpreter
A BSL/English interpreter makes it easier for a deaf sign language user and a
hearing person to communicate with each other. They interpret from one language to the other – so from British Sign Language (BSL) to spoken or written English, or spoken or written English to BSL.
Training
There are two routes to registering as a BSL/English Interpreter - the Higher Education route or NVQ (vocational) route.
Higher Education Route
A number of university courses are approved against Interpreter Registration Standards.
NVQ Route
If you choose this route, you will need to complete Level 4 NVQ in BSL/ISL, and Level 4 NVQ in Interpreting (BSL/English).
The category of registration you fall into will depend on your qualifications and experience. The 'Routes to Registration' document outlines the qualifications you require, to register in each category.
