What is the IRP

In 2000, following consultation with interpreters, deaf organisations and other stakeholders, CACDP’s registration system was revised and the Independent Registration Panel (IRP) was set up.

The IRP administers the register of BSL/English Interpreters and approves applications for entry into the register. It is made up of members who are from the following groups:

•  Deaf consumers and BSL  
   Tutors
•  Professional association of  
   Interpreters
•  Employers of    
   Interpreters/interpreting  
   agencies

•  Providers of recognised
   Interpreter Training  
   Programmes and    Assessment Centres
• External examiners and
   external verifiers

CACDP has one representative on the IRP. There are also two co-opted members.

The work of the IRP includes:

•  Setting the criteria for entry for     each category of Interpreter
•  Approving new training
   courses
•  Administering a complaints  
   procedure and investigating  
   complaints against    Interpreters
